As “Lady Lush” briefly introduces itself as a spaghetti western, one can almost hear the saloon doors swing open as the anticipation of a showdown builds. Once the doors open, however, the music changes, and instead of a diabolical mustachioed gun toting cowboy, there stands an even greater nemesis, “Lady Lush”. Whether “Lady Lush” is the mischievous inner spirit that causes many of us to drink and subsequently make bad decisions, or if it is an actual depiction of our hero’s insanely out of control girlfriend at the time, is entirely up to the listener. With a lyrical vibe reminiscent of Billy Joel’s “Big Shot”, the themes work through pain and frustration with just enough humor to take the edge off, but not too much to be taken un-seriously. The musicians of Wabi Sabi forge soul and life into this perpetual-motion-reggae-groove-machine that feels almost kinetic in its energy. Deep bass and drums, deliciously sticky guitars, breathing organs, and lush horns all surround charmingly expressive vocals and colorful harmonies. There is also a “tipsy” trombone solo followed later by some “bitchin’” bluesy trumpet taunting at the end to completely immerse the listener in the experience!
